Hut Point and Herbies

Hi all!

I have been a little under the weather with the infamous McMurdo Crud - stuffy nose, headache and really tired. But before I got sick, I was able to do a little walk out to Hut Point. It’s the historic hut about a 15-minute walk from the station. Here are some pictures:

This is Vince’s Cross, commemorating a fellow who died of drowning in the bay in 1902. There’s a very good view of the Ice Runway and the station from here.

Scott’s Hut, looking down from Vince’s Cross. The Ice Pier is in the background, and the station is beyond that.

Looking out on the sea ice. Eventually it will all melt and be mostly open water, but right now it is strong enough for C-17s to land on! The buildings to the left are the airport.

Currently we had a Herbie blow in, which is a really bad windy storm they get here. The windchill has been as low as -78 degrees F!! DAMN COLD!!!

As ususal, great pictures! Although kind of scarry thinking about how isolated you are. Sorry about the crud but it seems we all get sick when we relocate. Just part of the adventure. Sita is having a great time. Sits in the sun on the porch during the warm days and then where ever the hell she wants the rest of the time. Put her on the leash a couple of days ago to go for a walk. The dogs were really exited to have her along. She made it to the end of the driveway - mostly in dragging mode. So we went back in. She was really excited to get back in! We are expecting a very cold winter based on the ever thickening fur coat Sita is growing. Not shedding much now, but when she starts, its going to be a Herbie of a hair storm at the Omdahls.

If you think one Sita shedding is bad, try two! Only time I’ve ever gotten the kitties to be excited about ‘outside’ was when they’d been in the car for five days driving cross-country. They were totally psyched to check out bushes, shrubs, and the nearby woods then … I had to put them back in boxes to avoid popping their leashes. (Even then, Mz. Cari managed to unzip her carrying case and pop out again into the night - but happily, she came right back when called.)

Mmm, McMurdo crud. You’ve got my sympathy - I’ve got the Denver crud after GSA. Ugh.

Fantastic pics once again. Curious to hear more about the ‘herbies’ - that’s not a variety of storm I’ve ever heard of before! -78F is pretty outlandish, though. Good weather for staying indoors and nursing a cold!

BTW, what did you wear for Halloween? You left those pics out! ;)

Not much new and exciting here. I (Jason) have a bit of a sore throat today so I just sat down to the computer with a nice hot cup of Black Chai Tea. Just doing my work at school and need to get a few more requirements out of the way before I can just focus on how things will go for me as I progress towards student teaching.

Lisa and I were out and about today and found a couple more pieces of art to hang on the walls. One of these days I might even get back to unpacking instead of homework! :)

Anyhow, glad to hear that things are going swimmingly even with a cold. We’re enjoying the pictures!

All right, was digging online for ‘Herbie’ references and found this - a general purpose dictionary website for Antarctic slang!

Just thought it might help out. ^^

Wow, -78! Holy ice flow batman! Beautiful photos, especially the shot of the sea ice. I bet it must be cool to have the sun up for so many hours though (not that its helping warm things up it sounds like). I loved that in Ireland.

I hope you’re feeling better soon. Jason has caught yet another cold after we both just recovered from previous crud.

We’re not unpacked yet, but we do have art on our walls now at the new digs, yay! Helps break-up the monotony of the overly white walls.

    Ciao for now,
    Lisa
